Be the Change & Become a Peacemaker

Peacemakers meet and interact with youth experiencing conflict to resolve problems without violence. They may provide ongoing support for youth and develop relationships that allow them to set expectations for breaking cycles of violence, while helping to meet youth’s human needs. Peacemakers may be dispatched to community events or locations that can set the stage for violence such as community parks, youth sports events, in or around schools, and common routes that children use to walk home from school. Peacemakers may also work with the shooting response team to support youth, families and communities directly impacted by violence.

Credible messengers, persons who have lived experiences with violence through loss, victimization or pulling the trigger in the past, are key to violence interruption. Though they may have previously engaged or been victimized by violence, they are now on the path to healing, recovery and becoming productive citizens. A criminal record and former gang affiliation does not necessarily disqualify a person from this position. Credible messengers are highly desired for this program.

Peacemakers can also be influential adults and older youth in the Berks community who want to be part of the solution to youth violence in Berks County.
